THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSIFICATION
Dear Readers,
The US stock market is experiencing an unprecedented level of concentration, with a handful of mega-cap technology titans commanding a massive share of total market value. In indices like the S&P 500, a tiny group of companies, often referred to as the "Magnificent Seven", now accounts for nearly a third of the entire index's weight. While these corporate giants have driven spectacular market gains, their overwhelming dominance creates significant structural risks, distorts market health, and complicates strategies for everyday investors.
This extreme concentration fundamentally alters how market indices perform. Because the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are market-capitalisation-weighted, larger companies exert a disproportionate influence on daily movements. When a single mega-cap stock gains or loses five percent, it can move the entire index, masking the performance of the other 490+ companies. This creates a dangerous illusion of a roaring bull market. In reality, a "hidden bear market" can occur where the average stock is flat or declining, but the headline index hits record highs solely because three or four tech giants are surging.
For investors, this lack of breadth undermines the core principle of diversification. Millions of people invest in passive index funds under the assumption that they are buying a broad, balanced basket of the economy. However, an investor buying a standard S&P 500 fund today is heavily exposed to a single sector: technology. If a systemic issue hits the tech industry, such as aggressive antitrust regulations, supply chain fractures in microchip manufacturing, or a cooling of artificial intelligence enthusiasm, the entire market could be impacted. True diversification becomes difficult to achieve through traditional indexing alone.
It is encouraging then to see the diversity of the Orion Investment Management offering discussed in this edition of Optimum. We have every confidence that OIM has a fund suited to practically every investor, while we continue to develop an even broader offering to be launched in the coming months.
Sincerely,

Ian Kilbride
